In the spirit of National Coming Out Day on October 11th, Read the Rainbow would like to take a moment to provide a bit of assistance to those with children who wish to communicate ideas about alternative lifestyles. READ A BOOK! Children take a lot away from the stories they are read by their care takers and using creative picture books by published authors can help you have those difficult conversations.
When I was growing up and just beginning to cultivate my love for reading, I was always excited to spend an afternoon with Amelia Bedelia, the crazy-anticked but well-meaning girl who could never seem to do anything right. Amelia Bedelia, to me, will never be just an entertaining, crazy adventure. Amelia Bedelia always worked her hardest in the Rogers' household, inspiring me to do the same. Also, sometimes in life, even when we have the best of intentions, something is lost and things go awry. I like to remember Amelia Bedelia in my adult life ans she helps me carry on when things get tough.
